How did we not go extinct thousands of years ago?

Seeing as cavemen probably couldn't outrun most predators, hadn't learnt how to use tools yet-or at least not ones that could kill animals, and only have one or two offspring at a time? (Which are completely dependable on the adult for years and years) So, how on earth are humans still around?
