Not much on the on the when so good-bye best answer, but Alexander Graham Bell got credited first because he presented it first plus I believe Gray's created an improved telegraph that still uses Morse code whereas that Bell's can talk language through. The first line he said though was to his secretary, "Hey, come over here," on the telephone.
